The Port City Brass

From Baroque to Beatles and Everything In-Between

John MacLeod (trumpet) is currently Principal Trumpet of the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra and Piscataqua River Brass and is in demand as a free-lance soloist. He has also performed with the Granite State Opera Orchestra and Granite State Symphony Orchestra.  John’s 30-year career also includes extensive jazz, musical theater and chamber work. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Music from Duke University. As lead trumpet in Duke’s Jazz Ensemble, John had the honor of teaming with such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Terrence Blanchard, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey, Lionel Hampton and Les Brown.

Mark Zielinski (trumpet) performed most recently as Principal Trumpet in Maine State Ballet's Nutcracker in Portland, ME.  He is a native of Indiana, and received his Bachelor of Music Education from Indiana University in 1995 and a Master of Music degree in trumpet, with a cognate field in Wind Conducting from the same institution in 1997. Mark has worked with a number of music programs in Indiana, Georgia, and Maryland as a brass instructor and clinician and has taught music at the middle school, high school, and collegiate level.

Luanne O’Reilly (horn) performs throughout the Seacoast area. In addition to occupying the Principal Horn position with the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra and formerly the Seacoast Wind Ensemble, Luanne plays in a horn trio, is a regular guest with area wind quintets, and is an accomplished harpist and inventor (see our New / Events / Links page for her ingenious harp transport systems and accessories!).

Mark Schneider (trombone) is currently Principal Trombone of both the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra and the Seacoast Wind Ensemble, and has performed in a wide selection of jazz, big band, orchestral, and musical organizations throughout northern New England. Mark received a bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from the University of Connecticut, and studied with members of several leading symphony orchestras, with the late jazz trombonist Sonny Costanza, and especially with Eastman Brass Quintet founder, Daniel Patrylak. He does freelance work and may be accepting brass students for private lessons.

Jim Griswold (bass trombone/tuba) is the Principal Bass Trombone in the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra and plays regularly with Piscataqua River Brass as well. Throughout college Jim was a frequent member of many opera and musical theater pit orchestras as well. He makes his living as a hydrogeologist, focusing on both "clean water" (water supply exploration and development) and "dirty water" (contaminated soils and ground water) projects.  He also farms 56 acres in Lee, New Hampshire, raising hay and Rocky Mountain elk for sale from the farm and in local farmer's markets.

An intellectual snob is someone who can listen to the William Tell Overture
and not think of The Lone Ranger.
